A visit to Amish country
would not be complete
without understanding the
heritage of the Amish and
Mennonite families that live
within the same community.

They find their beginnings in
the Anabaptist movement
which began in the 1500's.  
Having upset the religious
community in Europe by
promoting adult baptism,
they soon found they were
Amish People
Are Amish people nice?  Yes!  
Amish people are some of the
kindest, hardest working,
most honest individuals one
could hope to meet.  Not only
are Amish people interesting
to observe, but they are a
reminder to all of us about the
value found within our own
simplistic, ancestral roots.

Amish
persecuted and chose to respond with non-violence.  The gentle Amish and
Mennonite people have a history laced with persecution and martyrdom.  As
they struggled to live out their religious beliefs, they migrated across
Europe, into Russia and even crossed the Atlantic into North America.

In Ohio's Amish country, the
Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center tells the
unique story of their beginnings and struggles through a 265 ft circular
mural entitled, "Behalt."  The 30 minute guided tour illustrates the history of
the Anabaptist movement, up to the present day.  The mural teaches the
precepts that formed the Amish and Mennonite beliefs, as well as their
journey for a more peaceful lifestyle.
